Sherrill Brumbach

My father was an artist, who was unable to pursue his dream and who encouraged me and my younger brother to "go for it." My brother "went for it" from the start and made art his profession. I took on family responsibilities and waited too long to get back to it -- I began to feel discontented with my life. When I realized that art was the missing element, I began to take art classes at the U of O, my kids being old enough to fend for themselves.

When I had given myself permission to spend the considerable time and money (for supplies) required to really call myself an artist, I discovered what I had known as a child, but had denied for years; I was created to be an artist. It is now very evident how important it is to be using the gifts and passions that God has placed within me.

I am really enjoying the challenge of color work and find every painting to be an adventure. Many subjects interest me and I am always looking for new textures and techniques to try, so my work is varied. May goal is to represent nature realistically, but also to use the texture techniques to just suggest the detail -- keeping it random and interesting. Pastel has become my favorite medium -- it is so immediate, with no mixing of pigment, just wonderful layering. Watercolors never cease to intrigue me with their endless possibilities in technique and style.

Besides at the Art & Soul Gallery, my work can be seen regularly at the Harper-Howell Gallery, Grants Pass, OR and at various art shows and businesses in Grants Pass.
